HISTORY

The first Students’ Conference on Economics, held in 1998 by students of Economics department in Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, was organized for students in Economics department of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of all universities in Aegean Region with the main topic “Globalization and Turkey”.

In 1999, expanding the scope, all departments of eighteen Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of universities around Turkey attended the 2nd Students’ Conference on Economics which was entitled as “Science – Technology – Industry”.

In 2000, with the cooperation of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the two long-established universities of İzmir, Ege University and Dokuz Eylül University, the 3rd Students Conference on Economics was organized with the main topic “Future of Turkey in the Light of New Developments in World Economy”.

With ongoing cooperation of two universities in 2001, 4th Students Conference on Economics entitled “Digitalization and the Internet Economy” was held on 25 – 27 April 2001.

5th Students Conference on Economics was held on 8-10 May 2002 when the crisis occurs consecutively in Turkey and in the World with the cooperation of Ege University and İzmir University Of Economics with the topic “Pursuit of Stability in the World and Turkey”.

In 2003, with the cooperation of four universities, which are Ege University, İzmir University Of Economics, METU and Maltepe University, 6th Students Conference on Economics entitled “Turkish Economy in the 80th Anniversary of Economic Congress in Izmir” was held on 07-09 May 2003 with remarkable attendance from several universities.

7th Students Conference on Economics, led by Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, was entitled “Regional Development: Theory, Strategy and Management” in 28 – 30 April 2004.

On 20–22 April 2005, with the cooperation of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Dokuz Eylül Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences 8th Students Conference on Economics was held with the topic “Effects of European Union Negotiations on Turkey’s Development Process”.

As of 2006 our congress which has been promoted under the leadership of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, showed a great success by organizing with the topic “European Union Enlargement Process: Today, Tomorrow” for the ninth time between the date April 26 and 28.

On 3-4 May of 2007, International Students’ Conference on Economics which was organized the 10th time with the top title “Innovations, Global Competition and Turkey” allowed for the students of Turkey and other countries a scientific debate platform.

11th International Students’ Conference on Economics dealt with the subject “Global Warming: Economic, Political and Social Effects” on 8-9 May of 2008.

In the year of 2009 12th International Students’ Conference on Economics dealt with the subject “Global Economic Crisis: Causes, Effects and Solutions” on 7-8 May.

On 12-14 May 2010, 13th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held with the top title “Unemployment in Turkey and in the World”, gathered undergraduate and graduate students from different 32 countries. The opening lesson was given by Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan. In our congress, there has been given a “Young Economist” award in honor of Prof. Dr. Gülten Kazgan.

14th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held on 11-13 May 2011. The opening lesson titled as “Economics and Econometrics: A Historical Perspective” was given by Prof. Dr. Ercan Uygur. The students from the USA, the UK, Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Romania, Kyrgyzstan, Tunisia and Cameroon participated in our congress, where the title was not determined in order not to limit student’s creativity. In our congress, there has been given a “Young Economist” award in honor of Prof. Dr. Refet Saygılı.

15th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held without the top title on 25-27 April 2012, gathered undergraduate and graduate students. The opening lesson was held by Prof. Dr. Güzin Erlat. “The Young Economist” award was given by Prof. Dr Haluk Erlat in honor of him.

16th International Students’ Conference on Economics which had great participation from universities of different countries such as Germany, Switzerland, France, Netherlands, the UK, China, Azerbaijan, Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia, Mongolia, Iran and India was held between 24-26 April 2013. The opening lesson was given by Prof. Dr. Erinç Yeldan and within the context of congress, Dr Faik Uyanık from UNDP took a part in the panel to give information about Human Development Report. Last day in the congress, Trainings of financial carrier and job possibilities and future-derivatived markets were held by Aegean Finance Association. Also the Young Economist award was given by Prof. Dr. Fikret Şenses in honor of him.

17th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held on 7-9 May 2014. The opening lecture was presented by Prof. Dr. Korkut Boratav, one of the most outstanding economics academicians in Turkey. On the last day of the congress, Aegean Finance Association organized a training on “Financial Literacy”. The Young Economist Award was given by Prof. Dr. Korkut Boratav in honor of him.

18th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held with the top title “Green Economy, Green Energy and Green Consumption” on 28-30 April 2015. The opening lesson was held by Prof Dr Ömer Faruk Çolak. Within the scope of the top title, panels titled “Ecological Economics” and “Green Economy, Green Energy and Green Production” were held as well. On the last day of the congress, Aegean Finance Association organized a training on “Energy Markets, Financing and Energy”.

19th International Students’ Conference on Economics was organized with the theme of “Human Capital, Entrepreneurship and Innovation”. Our honored guest Sabri Ünlütürk, the coordinator head of Aegean Exporters’ Associations presented the opening lecture. The panel titled “Young Entrepreneurs” was held on the first day of our congress, and “Human Capital, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” was held on the second day. On the third day of our congress, a training programme titled as “Financing of Entrepreneurs and Innovations” was organized in cooperation with the Aegean Finance Association and TEB.

20th International Students’ Conference on Economics was held on 26-28 April 2017, with the main title “Developments in Turkey and Around the World on the 20th Anniversary of the International Students’ Congress on Economics” and our honored guest Prof. Dr. Serdar Sayan presented the opening lecture. On the first day of the congress, a forum titled “The 20th Anniversary of the International Students’ Congress on Economics” was organized, where all students who participated in our congress as presenters or listeners, as well as our graduate students, who played a major role in ensuring the continuity of the congress shared their experiences about the congress. On the second day of our congress, a panel titled “Economic Developments in the World and in Turkey” was held.

In order to discuss current developments, 21st International Students’ Conference on Economics was held with the title of “Digital Transformation: Industry 4.0” between 25-27 April 2018. The opening lecture of our congress was given by Ali Rıza Ersoy, the founder of ION Academy. The panel titled “Sectoral Effects of Digitalization” was organized by Dr. Erçin GÜDÜCÜ (General Secretary of Izmir Commodity Exchange) and Prof. Dr. Haluk Soyuer (Ege University Department of Business Administration). On the last day, Aegean Finance Association organized a training called “Cryptocurrencies and Block Chain Technology”.

22nd International Conference of Economics Students was held with the title of “Current Issues in the World and Turkish Economies” on May 9-10th, 2019. Our honored guest Prof. Dr. Osman Aydoğuş presented the opening lecture titled “Turkish Economy and Crisis”.

The 23rd International Economics Students Congress, which was postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was held on the digital platform on May 27-28, 2021 with the top title “Current Issues in Development”. The opening lecture was given by Prof. Dr. Gülçin Özkan from King’s College London. Also, a panel titled “Regional Development: The Example of Izmir” was organized.
