HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ CONFERENCE

The first of Students Conference on Economics, held in 1998 by students of Economics department in Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, was organized for students in Economics department of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of all universities in Aegean Region with the main topic “Globalization and Turkey”.

In 1999, expanding the scope, all departments of eighteen Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of universities around Turkey has attended the 2nd Students Conference on Economics which was entitled “Science – Technology – Industry”.

In 2000, with the cooperation of Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences of the two long-established universities of İzmir, Ege University and Dokuz Eylül University, the 3rd Students Conference on Economics was organized with the main topic “Future of Turkey in the Light of New Developments in World Economy”.

With ongoing cooperation of two universities in 2001, 4th Students Conference on Economics entitled “Digitalization and the Internet Economy” was held on 25 – 27 April 2001.

The next year, 5th Students Conference on Economics was held on 8-10 May 2002 with the cooperation of Ege University and İzmir University Of Economics with the topic “Pursuit of Stability in the World and Turkey”. In an environment, where the crisis occurs consecutively, this conference has given the students the opportunity to express their opinions and discuss the related subjects in academic platform.

In 2003, with the cooperation of four universities, which are Ege University, İzmir University Of Economics, METU and Maltepe University, 6th Students Conference on Economics entitled “Turkish Economy in the 80th Anniversary of Economic Congress in Izmir” was held on 07-09 May 2003 with remarkable attendance from several universities.

7th Students Conference on Economics, led by Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, was entitled “Regional Development: Theory, Strategy and Management” in 28 – 30 April 2004.

On 20–22 April 2005, with the cooperation of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences and Dokuz Eylül Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences 8th Students Conference on Economics was held with the topic “Effects of European Union Negotiations on Turkey’s Development Process”.

In the year of 2006, our congress which has been promoted under the leadership of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, has shown a great success by organizing with the topic “European Union Enlargement Process: Today, Tomorrow” between the date April 26 and 28.

On 3-4 May of 2007, “International Students’ Conference on Economics” which was organized the 10th time under the leadership of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences with the top title “Innovations, Global Competition and Turkey” has allowed for the students of Turkey and other countries a scientific debate platform.

On 8-9 May of 2008, “International Students’ Conference on Economics” which was organized under the leadership of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, has dealt with a very significant subject “Global Warming: Economic, Political and Social Effects”.

In the year of 2009 “International Students’ Conference on Economics” which was organized under the leadership of Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, has dealt with the subject “Global Economic Crisis: Causes, Effects and Solutions” on 7-8 May.

On 12-14 May 2010, “International Students’ Conference on Economics” which is held with the top title “Unemployment in Turkey and in the World”, gathered undergraduate and graduate students. There has been many valuable participants and speakers of academia in congress, such as İnsan Tunalı (Koc University), Hasan Ersel (Referans Newspaper), Gaye Yılmaz (Bogazici University), Ali Bilge (İktisat, İsletme ve Finans Journal), Fuat Ercan (Marmara Univresity), Yasar Uysal (Dokuz Eylul University), Sibel Ozbudun (Hacettepe University), Seyfettin Gursel (Bahcesehir University, BETAM), Mustafa Sonmez (Cumhuriyet Newspaper), Omer Faruk Colak (Dunya Newspaper). In addition to these, the opening lesson was given by Prof. Dr. Gulten Kazgan. In our congress, there has been given a “Young Economist” award in honor of Prof. Dr. Gulten Kazgan.

15. International Students’ Conference on Economics was held on 11-13 May 2011. The opening lesson was given by Prof.Dr.Ercan Uygur and as part of the congress Ahmet Nazif Zorlu, who is the chairman of the board of Zorlu Group, took a part in the panel. In our congress, there has been given a Young Economist award in honor of Prof. Dr. Refik Saygili

The tradition had been continued in 2012 and on 25-27 April 2012, International Students’ Conference on Economics which was held without the top title, gathered undergraduate and graduate students. The opening lesson was held Prof. Dr. Güzin Erlat and Prof.Dr.Osman Aydogus and Assoc.Prof.Dr.Aykut Lenger took a part in a panel about Turkey.  Also the Young Economist award, which is traditional since 2010, was given by Prof. Dr Haluk Erlat in honor of him.

Last year, 16.International Students’ Conference on Economics was organized by Ege University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences without the top title, like last 3 years. The opening lesson was given by Prof.Dr.Erinç Yeldan (Yasar Üniversitesi) and within the context of congress Dr Faik Uyanik from UNDP took a part in the panel to give information about Human Development Report. Last day in the congress, Trainings of financial carrier and job possibilities and future-derivatived markets were held by Aegean Finance Association. Also the Young Economist award was given by Prof. Dr Fikret Senses in honor of him.

Then 17th International Students’ Conference on Economics has been held on 7-9 May 2014. In addition to the established international participation by undergraduate and graduate students, the opening lecture has been presented by Prof Dr Korkut Boratav, one of the most outstanding economics academicians in Turkey. Within the conference, Prof Dr Ömer Faruk Çolak has made a presentation titled “Global Crisis and Saving Propensities”. An other presentation titled “Real Estate Economy and Housing Finance: Fundamentals and Trends in Turkey” was done by Dr Yener Coşkun, Head Expert of Capital Markets Board of Turkey. On the last day of the congress, Aegean Finance Association has organized a training on “Financial Literay”. The Young Economist Award has been given to honor Prof Dr Korkut Boratav, and was presented during the award ceremony by the esteemed academician himself.

Last year, 18. International Students’ Conference on Economics was held on 28-30 April 2015. The opening lesson was held by Prof Dr Ömer Faruk Çolak. Within the context of congress, many valuable participants (Meneviş Uzbay Pirili, Engin Yılmaz, Güneşin Aydemir, Duygu Kutluay, Zeynep Delen, Mahmut Boynudelik, Tunç Soyer, Can Sözen, Bülent Urgan, Toygun Tunçer) took a part in the panels to give information about ecological economy, green economy, green energy and green production. On the last day of the congress, Aegean Finance Association has organized a training on “Energy Markets, Financing and Energy Exchange”. Also the Young Economist award, which is traditional since 2010, was given in memory of Şuayip Durak.

Last year, 19th conference was organized with the theme of “Human Capital, Entrepreneurship and Innovation” with the intention to host theoretical and ampirical research on the issue. Our honored guest Sabri Ünlütürk, the coordinator head of Aegean Exporters’ Associations presented the opening lecture. Following Sabri Ünlkütürks opening lecture, a panel titled “Young Entrepreneurs” was held. The panel was presided by Associate Prof Dr Aykan Candemir. Participants of the panel were; Member of board of Directors of Hamsi Finger – Dilek Gediz, Co-founder of Nöromedia- Mümin Erakbaş, Founder of Turşu Agency – Umut Şan and Founder of Venüs Agency – Umut İlhan. Another panel titled “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” which was presided by Aegean branch president of Per-Yön foundation Serdar Kalaycıoğlu. The panel was held by Founder of Berik Enterprise- Hulis Berik, Chairman of the executive board of KESİAD – Zeki Yöndem, General Director of Dr. Oetker – Dr. Muhsin Çömden, Human resources manager of ESBAŞ – Bahar Baysal, General director and vice president of the executive board of Izmir Metro- Sönmez Alev. On the last day of our congress, Aegean Finance Association was hold “Entrepreneur and Financing of Innovations” themed training sessions at the conference hall of the faculty. The sessions were presided by Prof Dr Oğuzhan Altay and Associated Prof. Coşkun Küçüközmen and were held by the participation of Angel Investor and member of the board of directors of Aegean Finance Association- Mehmet Vurucu, Izmır Regional Sales Director of Turkish Economy Bank- Erdinç Uçarsoy, Energy Market Specialist and Member of the board of directors of Aegean Finance Association Emir Çetinkaya and Chief financial officer (CFO) of Sun Holding and President of supervisory board of Aegean Finance Association – İlknur Rodoplu
